WHITE STAR PARK - 800 acres

Located south of Gibsonburg on S.R. 300. Gravel roads and parking area. Site of the Park District's Maintenance Shop/Ranger Office.

Acquired 236 acres in Jan 1975 through lease agreement with the state. Ownership by Park District in 1991. Prior to that, quarry operation for mining limestone. Developed with federal Land & Water Conservation Fund money and sale of scrap metal on site. Additional 336 acres acquired in 1995, 80 acres in 2000 with assistance of  donation from Don Miller of Fremont. 41 acres added in 2002 with Clean Ohio Conservation Fund money. Over 100 acres added in 2003 with Clean Ohio Conservation Fund money.

 

Received the Outstanding Park Area Development Award from the Ohio Parks and Recreation Association in 1981. Received the Lake Erie Buffer Award in 2002 from Soil & Water Conservation.

 

Facilities include play equipment, tables, grills, well water, restrooms, volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, playfield, nature trails, mountain bike trails, boat ramp, shelters, day camp area, accessible fishing platform, scuba diving, camping.

 

White Star Quarry is 15 acres with a depth of 40'. Depth of tunnel near scuba access is 80'. Quarry is available for non-power boating, fishing. Vessels must have a valid Ohio boat license. Ohio fishing laws apply. No ice fishing permitted. Common fish caught: bluegill, bullhead, catfish, bass, trout, yellow perch.  Night fishing allowed on Friday nights from Memorial Day to end of Sept. Must be out of the park by midnight.

White Star Swim Beach open for 2008 on May 24-26, May 31-June 1, June 14-August 17, August 23-24, August 30-September 1, weather permitting. Hours are 12 noon until 7:00 p.m. Mon-Fri; and on Sat, Sun & holidays: 12 Noon until 8:00 p.m. Season passes are $35/Single Sandusky County resident, $40/Single non-resident; Family pass for Sandusky County resident is $50 + $10 additional for each child under 18 yrs old living in one household; ($50 + $15 per child for non-resident).  Daily rates are 2 years and under free, ages 3-12 are $2.50, and ages 13 and up are $3.50 per day. The beach house includes changing rooms and concession stand. Glass, cans, and inflatable devices are prohibited in beach area.  Swim area depth is from 0 - 15'.

 

White Star Campground is across from the park's main entrance. Primitive sites are $15 per site per night. Sites with water hook-up & electric hook-up are $25 per site, per night. Campground is open April 1 - December 31 and each site includes a table and fire ring. Sandusky County youth groups are free at primitive sites with two weeks notice.

 

White Star reservable facilities:

3 picnic shelters - $40 Sandusky County residents, $50 non-residents 10 tables, 60-80 people, one shelter with electricity.  When not reserved, shelters are on a first come, first serve basis.

 

Barn - $150 Sandusky County residents, $175 non-residents, 25 tables, 150-200 people, electricity.

 

Shed (small section of barn) - $50 Sandusky County residents, $65 non-residents, 15 tables, 90-120 people, electricity.

 

Special use permits are available for special events, day camps, etc.

Metal detectors on beach require special use permit, but may be used in all other facilities year-round.
